Transportation

Haikou, the north gate of Hainan island, has a satisfying transport system radiating to the whole country and even the world. It has direct flights with Los Angeles of US, Vancouver of Canada, London of UK, Paris of France, Amsterdam of the Netherlands, Sydney and Melbourne in Australia, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur of Malaysia, Bangkok of Thailand, and many other Asian destinations. If you are already within China, a wide range of vehicles can facilitate your trip to and from the city, including the planes, trains and ships. The urban transportation is generally good due to the orderly planning roads and the developed city-buses, taxis and high-speed rail.

Air

Haikou Meilan International Airport is about 24 miles (40 km) from the city center. It is one of the busiest air transportation hubs in China. There are totally 235 scheduled flights in the airport, and 225 of them are domestic flights between the city and major Chinese cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Xi’an. Major cities worldwide can be reached in 15 hours. The airport’s flight network covers South and Southeast Asian countries including Vietnam, Laos, Burma, India, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. In addition, there are flights to Los Angeles, Paris, Amsterdam, Melbourne, Sydney, Tokyo, Seoul and Lagos. Meilan Airport boasts very convenient ground transportation system. This system is mainly made up of taxis, six airport express bus lines, and frequent airport intercity bus between the city and other cities in Hainan Privince.

Train

Haikou has three railway stations responsible for passenger transport. Haikou East Railway Station, located in the center of Haikou, is the largest and most important railway station, which operates trains between the city and many other cities on Hainan Island, such as Chengmai, Wenchang, Sanya, etc. Meilan Railway Station mainly provides bullet trains to and from the airport. Haikou Station is an important railway station of the Guangdong Hainan Railway and Hainan East Ring Railway.

Long-distance Bus Stations

Haikou South Bus Station is located at the intersection of Nanhai Avenue and Longkun South Road in Haikou City, connecting Longkun Road, Haiyu Middle Line, East Line Expressway, Qiongwen Line and Shugang Avenue, and is mainly responsible for passenger road transportation in 11 cities and counties, including the East Line and the Middle Line.

Ports

Haikou Port is the port of Haikou City, Hainan Province, China. It is located in the north of Hainan Island, bordering Qiongzhou Strait in the north, starting from Yubao Cape in Chengmai Bay in the west, and ending at Beigang Island in Puqian Bay, Wenchang City in the east. It faces Leizhou Peninsula in Guangdong Province across Qiongzhou Strait in the north.

Urban Transportation

Metro Hainan Island Ring Railway is composed of Hainan East Ring Railway and Hainan West Ring Railway, connecting Haikou to Sanya. The East Ring Railway is 308km long and the West Ring Railway is 345km long. It mainly operates D-head trains and gives consideration to ordinary speed trains.

City-Bus City buses are easily accessible in the city, including daytime lines, night lines, airport shuttle buses, tourist buses and BRT lines. Apart from that, sightseeing bus lines are in service which take tourists to the major attractions in town.

Taxi A taxi charges CNY10 for the first 2.5 kilometers (1.55 miles) and CNY2.6 for succeeding each kilometer (0.6 mile). When a taxi runs farther than 35 kilometers (21.7 miles), extra 50% will be automatically charged for empty return.
